I'm not giving up masking tape but I am experimenting with different things. I guess I'm just proving a point right now, to myself more than anyone else. When I look around at what's happening in the art world - other artists, galleries, etc., I'm just seeing the same thing over and over again. It's laughable.

So I'm enjoying spring, hiking around the hood and picking up junk on the ground, waking up with fresh ideas, and trying to create something new and original everyday. That's what it's all about for me. Spontaneous, free-style art.

I know that what I'm making now may not be everyone's cup of tea, but such is life. I just hope you'll follow along for a while.

I'm finishing up some long overdue orders and then putting the tape dispenser on hold for a time to explore new projects. The website is being updated and I've already started working back in the studio to prepare for several great events this year.

For those who follow my work...

I've never really tried to explain where my creative energy comes from, mainly because it's just too damn complicated for me to put into words. On the outside, my work is what it is and I've been content with it being that way. This time around, however, an explanation needs to accompany this current series of work for it to be complete - in my mind anyway. I'm just at a different place right now.

Simply put, the work that I produce is a "clearing of the mind" for me. I live with a constant flow of thoughts and ideas that pretty much consume my mind. It's intense mental energy - good and bad - and sometimes it's overwhelming. I create the things that I create to free up my mind when it gets too full.

I experienced a bit of a meltdown this past December. 2010 had left me buried under a big pile of shit and it just became a little too overwhelming for me. I survived that moment in time. I took a break and now I'm spitting out all of the shit that's in my head, just like I've done with every other project in the past. It's a crazy mix of thoughts and ideas, positive and negative, and it needs to go.

It's always been this way for me. I don't have a catalogue. I don't have point and click ordering. I don't mass produce the same images over and over again. I simply hit the release valve on my brain, create a collection of work, and make space for the next project. That's why my work takes on a different form each time that I show a collection. The work that I produce is essentially my sketchbook. Once I've cleared my mind, I generally don't like to go back and revisit the moment, especially if it's a moment that has had a damaging effect on me.

I've often had people say to me, "I loved the stuff that you were doing last year..." While that means a lot to me, the fact is that I've done it and it's time to do something else. Once I've started something new, it's hard to go back.

This new series that I'm creating for the Fearrington Folk Art Show in February is simply the next generation of work. You'll see some of the same characters that you've seen before and you'll see some new ones. They're just done differently. The new series is called "Manipulation". The figures have taken the form of marionettes or puppets. They are articulated and more animated. They are controlled, posed and almost robotic. I have taken on the role of the puppet maker and master - the manipulator. I'm taking control back.

The work reflects the damage and pain of being on the receiving end of emotional manipulation. It reflects my attempt at healing. You'll see this in the figures, the textures, and the materials. I've tried to inject my humor into the work as I always do - it's my way of coping. They still are what they are and what they've always been - decorative objects meant to be enjoyed by someone. There's just a little more to the story this time. In order for me to move forward with my life, I needed to release the meaning behind the work.

I hope that you'll find it to be the best work that you've seen from me so far. See you in February.

Keepin' it fresh

The Fearrington Folk Art Show is just around the corner and that means that the party is over and HELL hath returned to the studio. Fortunately I have a new space to work in and I was lucky enough to have some creative inspiration rub off from some holiday visitors - a much needed breath of fresh air.

So what's coming to Fearrington this year? Well, I'm not telling but I can promise that it will be a collection of fresh ideas and lots of things that you haven't seen before. I'll have some familiar pieces, but lots of new things are on the horizon and keeping it fresh is what I'm all about.

I have always believed that if you say the same thing over and over and over again, people will stop believing and listening (Sarah Palin). The same holds true with art and artists, in my opinion.

Now this is nothing original - Chicken George Zupp, the drunken folk artist from Texas, does this on a year-round basis simply to support his nasty Natty Light habit. Basically, he's just a lazy ass who doesn't want to buy his own beer.

Looking forward to 2011, I'll be opening a studio and gallery space at ART WORKS in Richmond in early January. It's time to keep thing a little closer to home, so I'll be doing much more on a local level than I have in years past.

The last of the 2010 pieces are now up on my updated web pages. I'll be continuing to add new work there as it happens and as I get the studio up and running. I'll be off of the grid for the most part in January and February preparing for Fearrington in late Feb. I hope to make it my best and most interesting show yet with new ideas, new work and lots of it.

I have a collaborative project planned in 2011 with two of my favorite artist friends. Another book project is planned - something completely different and unexpected. It's time for new things.

The best way to get work from here on out is through the site or direct from the studio. The best way to keep up with me is by following the blog or the antics on Facebook. This will be a year of more work and a little less play. The tape is calling.

Bart does Edward Gorey's "Gashlycrumb Tinies" - an abecedarian tale retold in masking tape. This solo exhibition and fundraiser will be hanging at the Old Grannery Restaurant at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC from September 10th through November 11th with a reception on November 11th. All 26 pieces in the series will be raffled and 100% of the proceeds will go to the cause. More details and event information to come.
